2012 Election of Officers

Five individuals ran for five spots on the Chamber Board of Directors this past month. In lieu of an election, the 2011 Nominations Committee reviewed the applications and saw that all nominees possessed the requirements mandated for the Humboldt County Board of Directors., and with that settled, the Chamber is pleased to present the 2012-2013 Board of Directors.

Two individuals are returning to serve another two year term as a director on the board, Tobin Kueper and Bob Shaw.

Tobin represents Cyanco on the Board. He has been active during his recent term on the board, serving and volunteering on such committees, as the Wine Walks, Harvest Hops and Grapes and this years Christmas Parade of Lights. Tobin is an active member of the Lion's Club in Winnemucca, having served as president for two terms. He has also served on various and assorted community groups. His motto? You can't swim without getting wet, so you can't live without getting involved.

Bob Shaw of Computer Tamer has served on the Board of Directors since 2010 and is returning for his second term. He is a very active board member and a strong supporter of the shop local campaign. Shaw has served as the Vice President of the Board and on the Harvest Hops and Grapes Committee, as well as lending his hand at the BAH (Business After Hours) mixers. He is also active in Rotary and other community organizations.

New on the board this term are Michelle Miller of Miller Law, Pam Wickkiser of Humboldt General Hospital and Wild West Jewelry and Pawn, and Jose Contreras of Carry-On Trailer.

Wickkiser (and her husband) moved to Winnemucca four years ago from Pennsylvania to take the Radiation Manager position at HGH. In the past four years she and her husband have purchased Wild West Jewelry and Pawn and are already active in the Chamber's Wine Walks and other community activities. The Wickkisers have always been small business owners and Pam is ready to bring that expertise to the Chamber Board. She also serves on the Rural Planning Commission.

Michelle Miller and her family are recent additions to Humboldt County, but have been traveling her for over six years to visit family. Miller says she's come to love the community in those years and was ready to jump in with both feet once she got here. Her strong appreciation of community events and a background in marketing will serve the Chamber Board well. Miller is also active in Rotary and the Grass Valley Baptist Church.

Jose Contreras is committed to economic growth and diversity for Winnemucca. His fresh perspective and ideas, which come from his military and management background are just what the doctor ordered to spice up some long running (but very popular) Chamber events. Contreras and Carry-on Trailers have already begun their chamber event contribution by helping out with the Harvest Hops and Grapes this past year. Contreras, his wife, and daughter are happy to call Winnemucca their home.

The Chamber board consists of ten elected members. Terms revolve so that each year there is a blend of filled and available positions. The new board members will be installed along with the 2012 Executive officers on Tuesday, January 10th, during the Chamber's annual installation luncheon.

For more information on the luncheon call the office at 623-2225.

Christmas Parade of Lights Coming Soon

Brrr.....we've gotten a bit of a cold spell in the past week. The Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Parade of Lights will be here before we know it, so the time to plan is now! The theme this year is ‘It’s Beginning to look a lot like A Nevada Christmas.‘

The Parade of Lights will take place on Saturday, December 10th at 5:30 p.m. The parade will flow from Spare Time Bowl area down Bridge Street to the Winnemucca Hotel area. Line up is at 4:30pm.

We want to encourage everyone to please take part in this “fun for the whole community” event. The entries in the Parade of Lights have grown slightly every year and it is our hope to have that trend continue.

Immediately after the parade, spectators and participants alike are invited to the Nixon Lawn were Mayor Di An Putnam will be officially lighting the Memorial Tree (sponsored by Humboldt Volunteer Hospice). There will be Hot chocolate and caroling. Santa will be walking about and mingling with the crowd. Plan to attend and bring your camera along.

Kruise Night is Coming!

Thursday June 9th, is the very first 2011 Winnemucca Kruise Night of the season...and we’re looking for some vendors. This is the perfect opportunity for your non-profit organization, club, or affiliation to do a little self-promotion. There is no fee for a ’vendor’ or information table. You just need to call the Chamber office to sign up.

Both sides of Bridge street will be blocked off for a night of fun, food, music, and flashy cars. “We’re expecting all the car clubs to participate, but even if you don’t belong to a car club, and think your car is cool enough to show off, bring it on down,” says Chamber President Betty Lawrence, “We would also encourage local downtown businesses to extend their hours during the event for walk in traffic.” It’s the ultimate family evening. Call the Chamber office for more info at 623-2225.

General Membership Luncheons

What is it and why should you go? The Chamber hosts monthly meetings for their membership in the way of a luncheon. It’s in our by-laws that we have four “General Membership Meetings” a year. Why should you participate? You pay your dues, you’ve fulfilled your obligation, right? Wrong! We need your input and you need to know what your Chamber is doing for you. We all overextend ourselves sometimes, but what we choose to support is an important decision. The Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce is the only organization in town whose main purpose is to support and promote business; the place you get your livelihood. If you are in business, you are benefiting from the activities of the Chamber and should come give your input and ideas, and to voice your concerns, if you have them. The bonus is: it’s lunch. Ya gotta eat, don’t ya? We look forward to seeing you at the next “General Membership Luncheon on Tuesday, June 14. Mark your calendar now!

Jamie Dellera from the Silver State International Rodeo spoke at May’s Luncheon, held at the Winnemucca Inn on Tuesday, May 10th.

She spoke about the upcoming influx of over 500 participants in July (the week of the 4th) and what it can mean to your business.

For more information and updated details about this upcoming event, call the Convention Center at 623-5071.

Customer Service Award

Chamber President, Betty Lawrence presented Winnemucca Inn employee D’Ann Brown, with the Chamber’s Monthly Customer Service Award.

Nominated by Jeff Putnam and Fred Baryol, they find her to exemplify every aspect of a special service person.

To quote, “from her greeting, her attention to the needs of her customers, through check out, she is a true ambassador for both the Winnemucca Inn and the city of Winnemucca.”

The Chamber congratulates Brown and the Winnemucca Inn for a job well done!

Let the Spring Spruce Up Begin!

We ask it every year...are you ready for tourist season? Have you walked across the street from your establishment and really taken a good look at it? Sometimes we need to reevaluate our curb appeal. And believe me, the Chamber does too...our flower pots are nonexistent at the present. ( We will be working hard to get ready for tourist season in the next few weeks.)

First impressions state who we are....who you are....who Winnemucca, as a town, is.
Last month over 690 visitors stopped in at the Chamber Office on their way to other places. That's a huge potential for your business--690 people. Granted, some won't shop (they just need to use the loo), some will want to know what restaurants we have, some will grab a map, but some--a good percentage, will want to stay for a few hours and shop.
This is where 'curb appeal investment' comes in!
Not only tourists and visitors, but a new spruced up look on the outside, can entice even the most hardened community member to come see what you are up to.
This is where your Chamber Board (brilliant thinkers that they are) comes in.

The Chamber is holding a contest...the very first SPRING SPRUCE UP! Local businesses, all around town, are encouraged to spruce up their storefronts with a bit of paint, a few flower pots, some new signage, new window dressings or any other 'curb appeal' they can think of. Businesses that wish to be judged for the contest will be eligible to win $50 dollars in Chamber checks and 3 days of free advertising on the Chamber marquee, as well as have their picture published in the Humboldt Sun. THREE DAYS OF FREE ADVERTISING! Think of it--that's a huge return on your 'spruce up' investment, not to mention the customers who will notice and be flocking to your door!

As stated above, one does not need to be a downtown business, the Chamber judges will travel all over town to see your spruce ups! Just call the Chamber office and leave your intention of participating in the contest and have your Spruce Ups done by Wednesday, June 8th, the day before the first 2011 Winnemucca Kruise Night. Each participant will be promoted at Kruise Night--for the community at large to stop by and see what each business has done--and the Judges will have an exciting few days of visiting each business and inviting all to the Chamber Luncheon on June 14th for photo opts, announcement of the winner and presentation of the Chamber Checks.

So Winnemucca businesses--are you with us?
Let the Spring Spruce Up begin!!

Continuing Concerns for Radio Broadcasters

Last year, we were one of multiple Chambers of Commerce across rural
Nevada that expressed opposition to the recording industry’s proposed
performance fee on terrestrial radio - the Performance Rights Act. This
fee did not become law, but the recording industry is still advocating
this fee and pushing policy makers to support their position. This new fee
could be devastating for Nevada because our local radio stations are
important to our community’s economic well-being and play a vital public
safety role in times of crisis. We remain opposed to a new performance
fee on local radio stations.

Fortunately a resolution that opposes the imposition of any new
performance fee on broadcasters was introduced earlier this year. This
resolution is called the Local Radio Freedom Act and is supported by
Representatives Shelley Berkley (D-NV-1), Joseph Heck (R-NV-3), and Dean
Heller (R-NV-2). We hope Senator Reid will stand with Nevada’s radio
stations as well.
Please ask Senator Reid to join Nevada’s congressional delegation in
supporting Nevada’s local radio stations and the Local Radio Freedom Act.
